N/D (1852/4) Quarter Dollar Round. Breen and Gillio-222. Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Rich golden toning with semi-prooflike surfaces. A very extensive series, California Fractional Gold coins have been broken down into three general categories by numismatists on the basis of their assumed date of manufacture. The earliest pieces, such as this BG-222 specimen, known as Period One issues, are believed to have been struck 1852-56, both with and without dates. These issues conform closely to the federal coinage in relative weight and value, and many bear the same obverse bust of Liberty as seen on the United States gold dollars of 1849-54. Pop 102; 16 finer, 14 in 65, 2 in 66 (PCGS # 10407) .

Lot 1817
1855 Quarter Dollar Round Liberty. Breen and Gillio-226. Rarity 5. PCGS graded MS-63. Untoned. Ten obverse stars. In the date, the last 5 is high; 9 berries in wreath. Private banking and assaying firms stepped in to supply coins from 1849 to 1851 during the early years of the California gold rush; however, their lowest issues were valued at five dollars, and the demand for small coins intensified as business boomed. Therefore, in 1852, this need was met by a handful of jewelers in San Francisco, who began striking small gold pieces valued at one dollar, one half dollar and one quarter dollar. Though the intrinsic values of these coins fluctuated somewhat, they were usually close enough that the inflated boom economy of California neutralized whatever slight loss may have been suffered by those accepting them in trade. Their advantages simply outweighed their disadvantages, and the coins appear to have gained acceptance, as quite a number survive in worn condition. Pop 10; 4 finer in 64. 1853 Half Dollar Round Arms of California. BG-435. Low Rarity 5. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and semi-prooflike. Lightly toned. The only "Arms of California" reverse type. This is the famous Arms of California type: helmeted female, draped and cloaked, holding a spear and shield; bear at her feet (concealing part of a shield); mountains behind, all within a plain circle. Around, 13 minute elongated stars, with date below. The reverse eagle has a scroll in its beak, shield in one talon, and a huge branch in the other, attempting either to alight on or rise from a mountaintop, all within a plain circle.
